Top 10 Tuesday: Slap-worthy Girls in YA!

Hosted by: The Broke and the Bookish
This week's top 10: Those girls in YA that you just want to slap!

1. Bella from Twilight - before anyone slaps me for mentioning her, I have my reasons.  Yes I am a HUGE Twilight fan. It's the series that propelled my love to read YA, after all.  However - the poor pitiful me excuse got old after awhile.  Grow some balls & be your own woman!  You don't need a 90-something year old vampire to hold your hand constantly.

2. Vee from Hush, Hush - I am all about the kick ass best friends in YA, but when the best friend is doing more damage than good I tend to want to slap her.  Like sneaking off to an abandon high school in the middle of the night with 2 creepy strangers?! Yeah not such a good idea, Vee!

3. Bianca from The Duff - You may be saying what?! isn't this one of your favorite YA contemps?? Why yes it is.  However part of the reason why I loved it so much is because I wanted to slap some sense in to Bianca.  YOU CAN NOT BE PHYSICAL WITH A DUDE & EXPECT IT TO MEAN NOTHING.  I don't care who you are, you feel stuff not just between your legs when you sleep with a dude.  So don't act surprised when it's your heart that hurts.

4. Samantha from Before I Fall - I never found myself connecting with this girl.  Her actions made me want to slap her every new day she woke up.  As much as I wanted to love this book, I just couldn't.

5. The "Clueless Crew" in the Jessica Darling series - between the "OMIGOD's" and the constant quote hand gestures I wanted to slap Sara!  And don't get me started on Manda & her claim to be virginal when she was the walking STD of Pineville High!  Though I did get a good laugh from Jessica's point of view on these girls :-)

6. Chelsea from Playing Hurt - if you've read this book then you know exactly why I want to slap this chick!  Break things off with your boy before you dive in to another dude's pants.  Thanks!

7. Brianna from The Unwritten Rule - SOMEONE SLAP HER & SLAP HER NOW!  This homegirl needs a lesson or two.  Here's another example of what it means to be a sucky best friend.  Yes, it was obvious why she had these issues, but she still SUCKED.  I am not a fan of people making others feel like crap to better themselves.  Not one bit.

8. Lissa from Vampire Academy - this girl may be beautiful & powerful with her mind, but I like a girl who can kick butt too.  I felt like she used Rose as her bodyguard too often & too easily.  Stand up for yourself chick!  Or I might need to slap you. (I say this without reading the final 2 books - maybe she changes? lol)

9. Sharon from Audrey, Wait! - ohhh this chick really got under my skin.  The ultimate boyfriend stealer.  Why does God make people like this?! Seriously.  Go find your own dude to swoon over.  When you see that one is taken, HE IS TAKEN.  Move on to the next.  Audrey should have slapped her.  I would have.

10. That Mom in every YA book that pretends like she doesn't know her daughter is hurting or upset OR THAT SHE HAS STRANGE CREATURES LURKING IN HER BEDROOM AT NIGHT.  Seriously! How do they not know this?!  Open your eyes Mom!  Be active in your kid's life.  Thanks.

  1. Haha I find it really frustrating that the parents are so oblivious in YA. How can you NOT KNOW all this madness is going on?? Honestly.

  2. OMGgive me a second to take in this awesomeness of a post!! What a fantastic topic! You are so freaking right. Vee, Sam, Lissa, Bianca and Bella all pissed me of to no end!! Ridiculously made me want to slap them! I thought I was the only one, so good to know that I wasn't the only one who couldn't stand Sam. The book is beautifully written, but Sam? I couldn't get past her actions and I couldn't forgive her, and ultimately that affected my whole overall thought on the book. You were hilarious in your answers by the way! LOL xD

  3. #10 Case in point: the mom in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. She is the height of obliviousness! She needed a good shake before Sam started staying in Grace's room.

  4. I like that you've gone for slap-worthy! There's plenty more characters that I'd like to slap for reasons other than being mean.

  5. Tell us how you really feel, G! Lol! Love the post... The scenes in Twilight where Bella is literally screaming in her sleep because she misses Edtard really made me wanna puke. (Yes, I know how to spell) If my daughter did that, she would be in a 30-day treatment program.

Agree with #2 as well. I would ditch Vee so fast she wouldn't remember my name. What a complete idiot.

    Loved this!

  6. Sometimes I felt like Jessica was more horrible than the 'Clueless Crew' ... not that they weren't annoying or ridiculous, but Jessica thought she was so much better than them, judging them so badly, I felt like she was the mean girl.

Glad I'm not the only one who isn't a Lissa fan. I actually didn't mind her, but she was pretty boring. I think she does change a bit, growing some backbone, but her tendency to be so hesitant got on my nerves.

    LOL @ "That Mom". Totally.

  7. Ha ha! I love your reasons for Bella. Totally true!

  8. Totally with you on Bella and with the parents. Far too often they are so out of the loop or out of touch with their kids that you cringe. A slap is most certainly deserved in those cases! Nice list, G!

  9. I'm peeing my pants right now - LOVE IT. I haven't read a lot of these books but I totally get Bella, Bianca, and Chelsea.

  10. I agree with Lissa. She has bothered me in every book. She needs to stop thinking about just herself.

  11. Sorry to say that the only one I agree with you on is Bella.

  12. Oh! I totally agree with you on Vee, Bianca and Lissa! The VA series is my favourite but Lissa...euh. No, sorry. "That Mom" is soooo slap worthy too, LOL :)

  13. I would have to add Zoey from Forget You. She's got this great guy right in front of her that wants to be with her (Doug), yet she keeps insisting she's with Brandon, who basically used her.

I haven't read most of these books, but I do have to agree with Bella (New Moon), Vee, and Moms.

  14. I agree with you on the Mom thing for the most part, BUT I will have to say that if I was in one of these stories, both of my parents would not have been present. Haha, but most of the time they seem like "good" parents and still aren't around!

  15. Hahaha I have no idea how the parents in the books can be so clueless. "Honey? What was that thumping noise?" says the mom. "Oh, I'm sure ____ just fell off her bed and landed loudly on the floor." says the dad. Really? You don't think you should get up and check?? It drives me crazy lol

  16. Bella would definitely be one of mine. Totally loved the series, but her whinning & pining got old.

  17. I'm reading Saving Francesca right now, and Francesca's ex-'friends' are very slapworthy. They're such witches-- something that rhymes with bitches, anyway. :) Great list. Vee from Hush, Hush grated on my nerves, too.

  18. I agree with ALL of these. Even from the books I haven't read... THANK YOU for putting Bella on this list. Because she needs a darn good slap! Awesome list :D

  19. G, this is a fab post!

Couldn't agree more with #10, especially with Marla's comment. Both the parents in Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver and Linger are the kind that you feel like punching the lights out off, never mind slapping. Slappin isn't good enough on their case!

I would also add Ever from Evermore to this list. I have never seen a main character that is soooo good a complicating everything for herself! I wanted to set the book on fire.

  20. I agree with Bella, Lissa, and the Clueless Crew (which I'm reading the Jessica Darling series now so they drive me crazy!). Bella bothers me in both the book and the movie! Lissa I love but I have to agree that she needs to learn to stick up for herself!

  21. Bahahaha! I haven't read every book on your list but major fist pump to Vee! She made me SO mad and I had many a OH NO YOU DIDN'T moment while reading Hush, Hush!
